Ingredients

Scale

For Lettuce Wraps Sauce

  • 3 Tbsp Honey
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Ketchup
  • 1 tsp White Vinegar
  • 1.5 Tbsp Sriracha
  • 2 Cloves Garlic, minced or 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Hoisin Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
  • 1/4 Cup Chicken or Vegetable Stock
  • 1 tsp Sugar

For Chicken Filling

  • 1 Cup Chicken, minced
  • 1 small Onion, chopped
  • 1 Inch Ginger, grated
  • 4 Cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp Vegetable or Sesame Oil
  • Sesame Seeds for garnish
  • Spring Onion greens, chopped
  • Red Pepper Flakes, to taste
  • Lettuce cups or leaves (such as iceberg or butter lettuce) for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce: In a bowl, combine honey, salt, soy sauce, ketchup, white vinegar, sriracha, minced garlic, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, chicken or vegetable stock, and sugar. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated to create the flavorful lettuce wrap sauce.
  2. Sauté aromatics: Heat vegetable or sesame oil in a wok or large pan over medium heat. Once hot, add grated ginger, minced garlic, and chopped onion. Sauté until the onion becomes soft and translucent, releasing their fragrant aromas.
  3. Cook the chicken: Add the minced chicken to the pan, stirring well to separate clumps and ensure even cooking. Continue cooking until the chicken is fully cooked through and no longer pink.
  4. Add the sauce mixture: Pour the prepared sauce into the pan with the chicken. Stir thoroughly to coat the chicken evenly. Continue cooking until most of the sauce has thickened and mostly dried out, concentrating the flavors.
  5. Finish and garnish: Stir in sesame seeds, chopped spring onion greens, and red pepper flakes to add texture and a flavor kick. Mix well to combine.
  6. Serve: Arrange fresh lettuce cups or leaves on a serving plate. Spoon two to three tablespoons of the chicken mixture into each lettuce leaf. Serve immediately as a fresh, flavorful wrap.

Notes

  • You can prepare the chicken filling ahead of time and refrigerate it for later use.
  • Use any lettuce with firm leaves to hold the filling well; iceberg or butter lettuce work best.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute hoisin sauce with gluten-free hoisin and soy sauce with tamari or coconut aminos.
  • Alternatively, use finely chopped chicken breast or thigh meat instead of minced chicken.
  • To thicken the sauce, add a cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) while cooking the sauce.
  • Add shredded cabbage, carrot sticks, celery, or bok choy for extra crunch and nutrition.
  • Instead of wraps, serve the chicken mixture as a bowl over shredded lettuce or alongside steamed rice for a different meal presentation.
